The former college of plant protection included the department of plant diseases and insect pests, college of agriculture, Shandong University, the department of plant pathology and entomology, Shandong Agricultural College, and the Agricultural Technology School of Qilu University. In 1952, it was merged into the department of plant diseases and insect pests of Shandong Agricultural University during the national adjustment. In 1954, it was renamed the department of plant protection.

The college has six departments, namely, plant pathology, entomology, pesticide science, tobacco, forest protection and fungi resource utilization. The college has 1 plant protectionpost-doctorate R&D base, some doctoral programs of first-level disciplines in plant protection, and five sub doctorate disciplines in plant pathology, agricultural insect and pest control, pesticide science, fungus and tobacco. It also has 7 master degree programs in plant pathology, agricultural insect and pest control, pesticide science, forest protection, fungus, tobacco and plant protection. At present, there are 6 undergraduate majors, namely, plant protection, pharmaceutical engineering, animal and plant quarantine, tobacco, forest protection (pest prevention and control), and forest protection (fungus resources and utilization).

The college currently has 90 faculty members, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 Taishan scholars, 30 professors and 24 associate professors. Among them, there are 6 experts enjoying Special Allowance of the State Council, 1 national young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions, 2 members of national Millions of Talents Project, 1 post scientist in the technical system of national bulk vegetable industry , 1 national chief scientist of vegetable oomycetes, 1 outstanding talent of the Ministry of Education in the new century, 1 provincial teaching master, 1 Top Ten Outstanding Teacher in Shandong Province, 10 post experts of national or provincial agricultural industry system, 3 top-notch professionals in Shandong province, 3 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions in Shandong Province, and 4 post experts in the innovation team of modern agricultural industrial technology system in Shandong Province. A special professor post for Taishan scholars in the discipline of plant pathology was set up. It has the innovation team of Taishan scholars on plant pathology, the innovation team of distinguished professor of entomology, provincial key construction discipline of plant pathology, the provincial key discipline of entomology and the most important laboratory of pesticide at provincial level, and the Shandong research center of tobacco diseases and insect pests. The key laboratory of agricultural microbiology was built up with the support of the university and cost nearly 10 million yuan. The undergraduate experimental center has 15 laboratories, including 1 herbarium for insects, plant diseases and weeds, 1 pesticide processing laboratory, 1 plant protection station, 1 plant protection park and 1 insect breeding experimental field, running with 205 experimental projects. With a total area of 1766 square meters, the center has more than 2,400 instruments and equipment with a total value of more than 23.5 million yuan.

Great progress has been made in scientific research. More than 150 national and ministerial scientific research projects, such as 863 and the NSFC projects, were presided or participated by the faculty. The faculty also presided over 80 provincial projects, more than 100 departmental and horizontal projects and 4 international cooperation projects. It has accumulated more than 60 million yuan of project funds. In recent 4 years, the faculty of the college has gained 1 second prize of national scientific and technological progress, 1 first prize of scientific and technological progress in Shandong province, 3 second prizes of scientific and technological progress in Shandong Province, and 1 second prize of scientific and technological invention in Shandong Province. Over 600 papers have been published in various journals, among which over 300 have been indexed by SCI. The college has been strengthening cooperation and exchanges with domestic and foreign institutions, and has established long-term exchange visits and cooperation relations with scholars from some famous universities in Sweden, France, the United States, Israel, the United Kingdom, Japan and other countries.
