The College of Animal Science and Technology (Veterinary Medicine) was formerly the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Shandong Agricultural College, which was founded in 1949 and renamed the College of Animal Science and Technology in January 1994. The College of Veterinary Medicine was established in October 2006.

There were only 7 teachers and 35 students when the college was founded. Nowadays, there are 146 faculty and staff members (including 109 professional teachers), 21 postdoctoral scholars, 1,856 full-time undergraduates, and 515 full-time graduate students (including 73 doctors and 2 international students). There are 39 professors, 7 chair professors, 51 associate professors, 7 senior experimental technologists, 33 doctor supervisors and 92 master supervisors. 1 professor is supported by National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 professors obtained the awards of the National Hundred-Thousand-Ten-Thousand Talent Project, and 3 experts enjoy the special government allowance of the State Council. There are 2 middle-aged top-notch talents of China, 5 senior scientists in the National Modern Agricultural Technology System, 2 Taishan scholars, 4 Taishan industry leaders, 2 middle-aged top-notch talents of Shandong province, 1 chief scientist and 18 senior scientists in the provincial modern agricultural industrial technology system, and 2 directors of test stations.

It consists of 7 departments: Department of Basic Veterinary Medicine, Department of Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Department of Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction, Department of Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, Department of Aquaculture, and Department of Animal Pharmacy; 5 majors: animal science, veterinary medicine, aquaculture, animal pharmacy, and aquarium science and technology; 2 postdoctoral research stations of veterinary science and animal husbandry; 2 doctoral degree programs in the first-level disciplines of veterinary science (including basic veterinary science, preventive veterinary science and veterinary public health science) and animal husbandry (including animal nutrition physiology, animal genetics, breeding and reproduction, and animal biotechnology); 2 master’s degree programs in the first-level disciplines of veterinary science (including basic veterinary medicine, preventive veterinary medicine and clinical veterinary medicine) and animal husbandry (including animal genetics, breeding and reproduction, animal nutrition and feed science, and special economic animal feeding); 1 master’s degree program in the second-level discipline of aquatic biology; 2 professional degree programs of master of veterinary medicine and animal husbandry in master of agricultural extension.

The college owns 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 2 national specialty majors, 1 mainly developed major in Shandong famous university project, 3 provincial characteristic majors, 1 provincial key laboratory, 2 provincial key disciplines, 1 East China Scientific Observation and Experiment Station for Animal Biology of Animal Diseases of the Ministry of Agriculture, 1 Diagnosing Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture, 1 Experimental Center for Innovative Talent Training Models in Universities in Shandong Province.
