College of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering of Shandong Agricultural University was founded in 1959. It was originally called the Department of Agricultural Mechanization. In 1962, this department was merged into the Shandong Institute of Mechanization. In 1976, the recruitment of students was restored and the Department of Agricultural Mechanization was rebuilt a year later. In 1990, it was renamed as the Department of Agricultural Engineering. In 1994, the Department of Agricultural Engineering was withdrawn. Instead, College of Engineering and Technology was established. In 2000, it was renamed as College of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering.

Currently, the college has a team of 82 faculty and staff members, which include 15 professors, 25 associate professors, 6 doctoral supervisors, 30 master supervisors, 3 post-doctoral scientists, 3 award-winning agricultural machinery teachers, 1 exceptional ideological and moral model teacher in Shandong province, 2 distinguished teachers in Shandong province, 6 experts in modern agricultural industry and technology system of Shandong province. Furthermore, it has 134 doctoral candidates and master students and 2,106 undergraduate students.

The college is composed of 5 departments: Department of Agricultural Mechanization, Department of Mechanical Design and Manufacturing, Department of Transportation, Department of Automation and Department of Electrical Engineering. There are 7 undergraduate majors: Agricultural Mechanization and Automation, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Transportation, Automation, Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Energy and Environmental System Engineering. Agricultural Mechanization and Automation is one of the specialties in Shandong prvince. It is also among the top education projects funded by Shandong province.

Presently, it has a post-doctoral research station of agricultural engineering. The doctoral research program of Agricultural Engineering has been recognised as a first-class national discipline. In addition, there are 3 doctoral research programs recognised as second-class national disciplines. These are Agricultural Mechanization Engineering, Agricultural Electrification and Automation and Agricultural Bio-environment and Energy Engineering. In terms of masters’ education, it has 1 master science (MSc) program recognised as a first-class national discipline, 7 MSc programs as second-class national disciplines, 1 agricultural extension program, and 2 engineering programs (MEng) in Mechanical Engineering and Agricultural Engineering. The Agricultural Mechanization Engineering is one of the most popular programs in Shandong province.

The college has established several nationally and provincially recognised demonstration and research Centres. These include an Agricultural Mechanization and Automation Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centre, an Agricultural Mechanization and Automated Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Centre, and a national innovation experimental area for the cultivation of entrepreneurial talents in modern agricultural engineering. It also has electrical and electronic experimental teaching centres, mechanical engineering experimental teaching centres, and mechanical engineering training base of Shandong Agricultural University. There are 58 laboratories and several innovation labs, including Shandong Key Laboratory of Horticultural Machinery and Equipment, Intelligent Agricultural Machinery and Equipment Laboratory which is a key laboratory of universities in Shandong province, Shandong Agricultural University Branch Laboratory of the National Engineering Laboratory for Agricultural Production Machinery and Equipment, Facility Agriculture Engineering Science Observation Station of Ministry of Agriculture, Boron Chromium and Rare Earth Co-infiltration Technology Promotion Centre of Shandong province, Agricultural Machinery and Agronomy Combination Laboratory of Shandong Wheat Engineering Technology Research Centre, Intelligent Engineering Technology Research Centre for Agricultural Equipment of Shandong Agricultural University, MIE Technology Centre, Sida Machinery and Electronics Research Institute, Participating Unit of Shandong Provincial Collaborative Innovation Centre for Wheat and Corn Year-Round Production, Participating Unit of Shandong Collaborative Innovation Centre for High-Quality and Efficient Production of Fruits and Vegetables. The total area of laboratories is 8936 square meters. There are 11,384 sets (pieces) of equipment, with a total value of more than 37 million yuan. 1 course has been awarded nationally while 12 courses have been awarded in Shandong province.

The college has teaching, research and employment practice bases such as Shandong Wuzheng Group, Tai'an Special Vehicle Factory, Huaxing Group, Hualu Forging Machine Tool Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Luneng Tai'an Power Equipment Co., Ltd., Shandong Aipu Electric Equipment Co., Ltd., Shandong Tianyuan Water Affairs Co., Ltd. It also has 2 joint graduate training places of Shandong province.

The discipline construction and staff training system of the college has been continuously improved. In Agricultural Engineering there is a post-doctoral research station and a doctoral program which is endorsed as a national first-class discipline. The college also has a doctoral degree program for Agricultural Mechanization. Moreover, programs in Agricultural Mechanization Engineering, Agricultural Electrification and Automation, Agricultural Bio-Environment and Energy Engineering are recognized as national second-class disciplines. When it comes to masters’ education, 1 MSc program is accredited as national first-class discipline, 7 MSc as national second-class disciplines, 1 agricultural extension program, 2 MEng in Mechanical Engineering and Agricultural Engineering. Agricultural Mechanization Engineering is one of famous programs in Shandong province. There are 7 undergraduate majors: Agricultural Mechanization and Automation, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Transportation, Automation, Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, Vehicle Engineering and Environmental System Engineering. Among these majors, Agricultural Mechanization and Automation is very famous in Shandong province, which is also among the top education projects funded by Shandong province. In addition, Electrical Engineering and Automation is listed as the university’s featured specialty. Since the enrolment resumed in 1976, the college has cultivated as many as 10,815 talents in various fields.

So far significant achievements have been made in both scientific research and innovation platform construction. In recent years, it has undertaken 105 scientific research tasks funded by National Support Plan sub-projects, 863 projects, 948 projects, National Natural Science Foundation of China, State Tobacco Monopoly Administration, Science and Technology Research Project in Shandong Province as well as some horizontal projects. The total amount of research funding reached 14.55 million yuan. More than 360 research papers have been published, in which 148 are indexed by SCI, EI, ISTP, etc. 51 authorized patents have been granted, including 10 invention patents and 2 computer software copyrights. The faculty members have edited or coedited 25 textbooks and monographs. The college has won 13 scientific research awards, including the second and third grades of scientific and technological progress in Shandong province. The college is listed as one of the national and provincial agricultural equipment industry technology innovation strategic alliance units.

The college has always been attaching great importance to the training of talents. It has established a provincial outstanding teaching team and some provincial specialties, including 1 national, 6 provincial, and 9 university-level excellent courses. It has been awarded 1 first prize of outstanding higher education research achievement in Shandong province, and 1 third prize for education and teaching achievements of master students in Shandong province.
