I. College Overview

Formerly the College of Science founded in 1999, the College of Chemistry and Materials Science became an independent college in 2002. It consists of the Department of Applied Chemistry, Department of Materials Chemistry, Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering, Department of Basic Chemistry, and the Experimental Teaching Center for Chemistry. It offers three undergraduate majors: Applied Chemistry, Materials Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Engineering, among which Applied Chemistry and Materials Chemistry are Shandong Provincial First-Class Majors. The college is authorized to confer the professional doctoral degree in Biology and Medicine (Pharmaceutical Engineering), first-tier master’s degree in Chemistry, and professional master’s degree in Materials and Chemical Engineering. It also jointly trains doctoral candidates with multiple universities. The Chemistry discipline entered the global Top 1% of ESI rankings in May 2019, making it the third discipline of Shandong Agricultural University to achieve this milestone.

II. Faculty Team

The college has 98 faculty members in total, including 75 full-time teachers: 14 professors, 40 associate professors and 3 senior experimentalists. Thirty percent of the staff have overseas study or work experience. There are 7 doctoral supervisors and 43 master’s supervisors. The faculty includes 1 national-level talent, 2 Taishan Industrial Leading Talents, 1 Shandong Young and Middle-Aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions, 1 recipient of Shandong Provincial Excellent Youth Fund, 1 recipient of Shandong Overseas Excellent Youth Fund, 1 scholar supported by the Western China Talent Program, 4 Young Taishan Scholars, and 6 Shandong Provincial Innovation Teams.

III. Talent Cultivation

The college currently enrolls 753 undergraduates and 143 postgraduates. Talent cultivation has yielded remarkable results. In 2023, the postgraduate admission rate of undergraduate graduates reached 63.43%, more than half of whom (56.93%) pursued further studies at Double First-Class universities, while 20% of master’s graduates continued to pursue doctoral degrees. The graduate employment rate ranks first across the whole university.

IV. School-running Features

(I) Robust Scientific Research Platforms and Advanced Hardware Support

The college hosts five provincial, ministerial and industrial research platforms: the Key Laboratory of Agricultural Film Application of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Key Laboratory of Agricultural Films of China Light Industry, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Low-Carbon and Green Agriculture for Universities, and Shandong University Engineering Research Center for Future Industry of Graphene. It has jointly built the C1 Chemistry Laboratory with Shandong Jingbo Holding Group and is equipped with advanced analytical and testing instruments.

(II) Premium Teaching Resources and Fruitful Teaching Achievements

The college has developed 1 national first-class course, 4 Shandong provincial high-quality courses, 2 Shandong provincial first-class courses and 1 Shandong provincial model course integrating ideological and political education. A total of 23 textbooks have been published, 16 of which have won honors such as Excellent National Agricultural Education Textbooks and Shandong Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Textbooks. Since the launch of the 14th Five-Year Plan, over 40 teaching and research projects have been approved, and the college has won 1 First Prize of Shandong Provincial Teaching Achievement Award.

(III) Integrated Research & Application with Vibrant Innovation

The college attaches equal importance to theoretical and applied research. Since the 14th Five-Year Plan period, faculty have undertaken 89 research projects at all levels including sub-projects of the National Key R&D Program and National Natural Science Foundation projects, with total funding exceeding 43 million RMB. Fifty-two invention patents have been authorized, 18 research achievements have been commercialized, and 538 high-quality academic papers have been published.

(IV) Interdisciplinary Integration with Cutting-Edge Research Directions

Responding to national strategic and regional economic development demands and drawing on the university’s strengths in agriculture, forestry and life sciences, the college follows the Chemistry Plus interdisciplinary development philosophy. It prioritizes research in agricultural analysis, chemical biology, agricultural materials, green energy and green synthesis, cultivates high-quality innovative talents, and builds a high-level innovation base for interdisciplinary research.
